H28 Brushed Aluminum Strip: Finish, Temper and Size Guide

What H28 Brushed Aluminum Strip Is

H28 brushed aluminum strip is a flat aluminum product with a directional brushed surface and a work hardened temper designated H28 in the relevant alloy system. The finish provides a controlled linear appearance for trim, edging, panels and fabricated parts. H28 describes temper condition; it does not identify alloy, width, thickness or surface quality.

A buyer searching for brushed aluminum edging strips often needs two products described together: a metal strip with a consistent finish and a formable material for corners, covers or frames. The order should separate appearance requirements from mechanical requirements. A visually attractive strip can still crack during bending if its alloy and temper do not suit the profile.

Finish direction is part of the product identity. Brushing across the width produces a different visual line from brushing along the length. Define the viewing face, grain direction, acceptable variation and protective film requirement before sampling.

Separate Alloy, Temper and Surface Finish

Alloy controls corrosion resistance, strength, formability and response to finishing. Temper controls hardness and ductility within that alloy. Brushed finish controls appearance and surface texture. None of these fields can replace the others. A quote that says H28 brushed aluminum without alloy and dimensions remains incomplete.

If the strip will be folded, rolled or cut into angle trim, specify the minimum bend radius and preferred bend direction. H28 can provide useful strength, but the forming route may require a different temper or a controlled anneal. Test the actual strip through the intended tooling.

The site's aluminum wire and strip product section shows how product categories are organized. Use the category structure for a first inquiry, then state the strip alloy, H28 temper and finish in the technical drawing.

Control the H28 Temper for Bending

H28 indicates a strain hardened and partially stabilized condition in common aluminum temper designations. The exact strength and elongation depend on alloy. Do not infer bending performance from the temper code alone. Ask for mechanical values and perform a bend trial using the production radius.

A trim part may contain several operations: slitting, leveling, punching, rolling and folding. Each operation changes the edge and surface. A strip that bends well in a simple hand test can show edge cracking after slitting or distortion after a long roll forming route.

Record tool clearance, feed direction, lubrication and protective film behavior during the trial. Use samples from the same width and finish as the planned order. The qualification should state which face remains visible and how the part is inspected.

Design for a Consistent Brushed Appearance

Brushing creates parallel lines through abrasive contact. The line spacing, depth, pressure, belt condition and cleaning process affect the visual result. Agree a reference sample or approved limit photographs before production. Words such as fine, satin or hairline need a measurable or visual reference.

Lighting changes the appearance of brushed metal. Inspect samples under the lighting used for final assembly and customer review. Evaluate the full strip width, not only a small center section. Edges can show a different texture after slitting or trimming.

The site FAQ can help frame general material questions, but appearance approval should use a physical control sample. Keep that sample with the purchase specification and identify the viewing face.

Select Strip Dimensions and Edge Condition

Thickness and width determine the stiffness, weight and usable surface. Include tolerance because a trim channel or snap fit can reject material outside a narrow range. Specify whether edges should be slit, mill finished, rounded, deburred or suitable for a visible corner.

Coiled strip is efficient for continuous forming and high volume. Straight lengths support short parts, manual fabrication and low volume replacement work. The package must protect the brushed face from contact marks. Interleave or film should not leave adhesive residue after forming.

Camber and flatness matter for long visible runs. Ask the supplier to state measurement methods and limits. A strip can meet width and thickness requirements while still wandering in a roll forming machine.

Applications for H28 Brushed Aluminum Strip

  • Edging and corner trim: directional finish supports a clean visual line on panels and frames.
  • Interior equipment panels: lightweight aluminum provides a durable decorative surface.
  • Appliance accents: controlled brushing creates a repeatable metallic appearance.
  • Architectural inserts: long strips can form reveals, borders and protective edges.
  • Electrical enclosures: strip can serve as a formed cover or finishing component after design review.
  • Fabricated prototypes: short cut lengths let designers evaluate appearance and bending before volume release.

Compare H28 with Other Aluminum Tempers

The best temper depends on the balance between strength and forming. A softer O temper generally forms more easily. H14 offers a different half hard condition. H28 can provide useful stiffness and surface stability, but the required bend radius must be proven with the selected alloy.

ParameterSelection guidance
O temperHighest formability in many alloys, with lower strength and greater springback differences.
H14Half hard condition suited to many general forming and flat strip uses.
H24Partially annealed condition with a balance of strength and forming behavior.
H28Higher work hardened condition; confirm bend radius, edge quality and hardness.
Anodized stripSurface protection and color system differ from a mechanically brushed finish.

Protect the Surface Through Processing

The visible face should be protected during slitting, forming, transport and assembly. Define film adhesion, removal timing and allowable residue. A film that protects a flat strip can tear on a tight radius or leave fragments in a roll forming line.

Use clean guides and separators. Aluminum particles from cutting can scratch the brushed face when they move between layers. Inspect coil edges, core condition and wrap integrity at receiving. Photograph any damage before unpacking the full package.

After forming, remove the film according to the supplier process. Check for color change, fingerprints, oil marks and handling streaks. Acceptance should cover the finished component, because a good incoming strip can be damaged by tools or packaging downstream.

If the finished profile is assembled beside another metal, check contact conditions and drainage. Trapped moisture or dissimilar-metal contact can change corrosion performance. Select fasteners, coatings and barriers as part of the assembly design, particularly for outdoor or washdown service. The strip certificate alone does not establish the durability of the assembled trim.

For long architectural runs, inspect several coil positions and more than one production lot. A small approved coupon cannot show all variation in brushing direction, coil set or color. Define viewing distance and lighting in the inspection plan so the supplier and receiving team apply the same visual threshold.

Quality Evidence and Purchase Controls

Request an alloy and temper certificate, dimensional inspection report and finish reference. If corrosion or mechanical performance is critical, add the applicable test requirement. The supplier should identify the production route and confirm whether brushing and slitting occur at the same facility.

The manufacturer information page provides a starting point for supplier identity and communication. Ask for a product specific drawing and sample approval record before using the material in a customer facing part.

A purchase order should preserve the approved grain direction, viewing face, tolerance, edge condition, coil weight and packaging. Require notice before changing abrasive belt, substrate, alloy, temper or protective film. Appearance changes can be significant even when the nominal dimensions remain identical.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does H28 mean on brushed aluminum strip?

H28 identifies a work hardened and partially stabilized temper within an applicable aluminum temper system. It does not identify the alloy or brushed finish. Confirm alloy, thickness, mechanical values and bend performance because those properties depend on the complete material designation.

Is brushed aluminum strip suitable for tight bends?

Brushed aluminum strip can suit bends when the alloy, temper, thickness and bend radius are matched. H28 may require more radius than a softer temper. Run a production tool trial and inspect the visible face, edges and any cracking after forming.

How should the brushed direction be specified?

Specify whether the brush runs parallel or perpendicular to the strip length, identify the visible face and attach an approved sample. Also define acceptable line variation and inspection lighting. This prevents a supplier from interpreting a general satin finish as the required grain.

What packaging protects a brushed strip?

Protective film, interleaving, clean separators and moisture resistant outer wrapping protect the brushed face. The package should prevent coil movement and edge contact. Confirm that the film removes without residue and that the reel or straight length can be handled without sliding.

Request an H28 Brushed Strip Quote

Provide alloy, H28 temper, thickness, width, length or coil size, brush direction, finish reference, edge condition and forming radius. State annual quantity, packaging and inspection documents. A complete request lets the supplier propose samples, confirm appearance and quote production material that behaves consistently in your fabrication process.
